Humidity and sun are hard on fabrics, wood and rugs near the water. Retirees in Sun City and the Okatie area often bring in a designer for aging-in-place updates.

Fabric that looks perfect in a showroom can fade and mildew fast in a beach house. I'd ask the designer what that sofa will look like after three summers. Somebody who works here should have the answer ready.

Stressless recliners, Bassett, Hooker, Lane Venture and Summer Classics outdoor pieces are among the brands on the floor at FWDG, a furniture store on Robert Smalls Parkway in Beaufort that dates itself to 1972. Google also lists it for interior design, mattresses, rugs, outdoor furniture and consignment, and its mattress lines include Serta and Heritage Sleep.
An owner on every move is the promise from All The Right Moves Moving & Storage on Main Street, Hilton Head Island. It says it brings over a century of experience and handles everything from one high-end piece to cross-country and international moves, plus cubicle removal and installation for OfficeMax and Office Depot.
Vacation rentals come first at Bestnest by Beverly Serral, an office on New Orleans Road on Hilton Head that also handles real estate and interior design. Its homes and villas, many in Sea Pines, include oceanfront, private-pool and dog-friendly options, and owners can hire the company for rental management, property oversight and design work.
Quartz countertops and kitchen renovations dominate the reviews for StoneWorks Inc on Sheridan Park Circle in Bluffton, with templating, courteous installers and master bath remodels also coming up. The company sells porcelain, quartz, granite, marble and tile for countertops, fireplaces and floors, offers free design consultations and describes itself as family-operated with its own fabrication facility.
Free design help comes with the furniture at the Ethan Allen store on Okatie Center Boulevard North in Bluffton, according to its website. Shoppers can work with a designer or use the 3D room planner on their own, and the store carries upholstery, dining and bedroom furniture, artisan rugs, bedding and lighting, with delivery.
Timeless Interiors, a women-owned furniture store and design center on Bluffton Parkway by its own description, does a lot of home staging for real estate listings and model homes. Its website puts in-stock furniture at over 110,000 square feet and says the staging work has appeared on HGTV.
Donna Balkovic runs Donna's Place For Everything from Whitepoint Gardens Way in Bluffton, and the work is mostly organizing: purging, sorting and setting up systems for homes and offices. Her site also lists home staging, relocation planning and time management.
Consigned and new pieces share the floor at Vintage Market on Kitties Landing Road in Bluffton: furniture, art, lighting, patio furniture, gifts, clothing and vintage finds. The store also handles home staging and decorating by appointment, plus moving and house cleanouts, and it claims more than 6,900 consignors.
Faux flowers and plants are the signature at Branches, a home goods and gift shop on Arrow Road on Hilton Head. It makes artificial arrangements, wreaths and outdoor potted designs, sells antiques, local art and gifts, and holds floral design classes and workshops.

On Bay Street in Beaufort, M Home & Garden is listed as both an interior designer and a furniture store. It's open every day, with shorter Sunday hours.
Haig Point on Daufuskie Island is one of the portfolio projects for Interiors By Donna Coudés, whose Hilton Head office is on Indigo Run Drive. Donna Coudés describes herself as an Allied member of the American Society of Interior Designers, and her work covers new homes, reconstructions, model homes, renovations and offices, with past projects in Charleston, New York and Asheville.
Founder Ellen Nicole Dier runs Ellen Nicole Home, a residential design firm covering Bluffton and Port Royal, with projects on Hilton Head and in Charleston and Savannah, plus remote clients. The work runs from consultation to installation day: new construction and renovation selections, flooring, lighting, kitchens and baths, furnishings, art and home styling, and staging too.
One-day bath remodels, tub-to-shower conversions and walk-in showers are a big part of the business at Bluffton Builders, on Persimmon Street. The company says it's an authorized Fabuwood cabinet and Bathwraps by Jacuzzi dealer, and it also takes on kitchens, whole-home renovations, additions, porches and some commercial projects.
Opened in 2004, per the company, Coastal Chic Home Furnishings is a family-run store on Plantation Park Drive in Bluffton, with a second location in Savannah. Out-of-state buyers planning a retirement or relocation home are the clients Frederick + Frederick Architects writes for. The Lady's Island firm, on Meridian Road, claims more than 35 years designing high-performance custom homes built for heat, humidity and storms, and it uses 3D modeling and virtual reality to walk remote clients through the design.
Staging homes for sale is the main business at JKN Home Staging & Designs, which works from Red Oaks Lane in Ridgeland. It also offers furnishing and decorating, design for renovations and e-design, and its website has a shop and a portfolio of staged listings.
Part design studio, part boutique, the Bluffton shop of Leah Bailey Interiors on New Riverside Village Way sells clothing, jewelry, home decor and furniture alongside its interior design work. By its own account, Leah started the design business over a decade ago doing homes at Palmetto Bluff and at the Landings on Skidaway Island, and she runs a second store in Savannah.
In-house seamstresses and fabricators make the draperies, valances and custom bedding at Carolina Window Designs, a showroom on Hunter Road on Hilton Head Island. It also sells plantation shutters, shades, blinds and motorized treatments, works with designers and builders as well as homeowners, and claims more than 15 years in the business.
Dawn Crovo runs this full-service design studio on Banyan Way in Bluffton and, by her own account, has spent over two decades in residential design. Listening closely is what reviewers single out about Heron Homes Interiors, a Bluffton-based, boutique-style design firm that covers Bluffton, Hilton Head Island and Beaufort. Kitchen and bath design, bedrooms, art selection and decorating are on the list, along with commercial interiors and e-design.
A fabric and furniture store on Mathews Drive on Hilton Head Island, House of Design also does full residential and commercial interior design. Its list includes space and room planning, millwork design, flooring selection and art selection.
