Painters · the Lowcountry
Coastal weather is hard on paint. Sun, humidity and salt break down exterior coatings, and mildew shows up on shaded walls and north sides. Wood-frame houses with weatherboard siding in Old Town Bluffton and Beaufort's historic district need careful prep, and paint changes on contributing buildings in Beaufort's district go to the Historic Review Board. Many island villas fall under a regime or POA that sets the colors.
Ask what prep the price includes: washing, scraping, priming bare wood and replacing rot. How the siding gets cleaned matters too; soft washing vs pressure washing explains why.
The paint is only as good as what's under it. I'd ask the painter how they plan to find soft wood before the first coat goes on. Paint over rot looks fine for about one summer.
