Docks, Seawalls and Boat Lifts · the Lowcountry
Marsh and tidal creeks behind many neighborhoods put a dock or boat lift on plenty of wish lists, from the May River to the waters around Beaufort and Lady's Island. Salt water, big tides and storm surge work on every part of it: pilings, decking, fasteners, lift motors and cables. A dock that looks fine from the yard can be losing its hardware underneath.
Ask who handles the permits and how long they usually take, what grade of treated lumber and hardware goes into salt water, and whether lift motors and cables come with a service plan.
Look at the hardware, not just the lumber. Salt water eats cheap bolts and brackets long before the pilings give up.

Resurfacing docks and decks is right in the name at Coastal Dock and Resurfacing, a marine contractor based in Port Royal that also covers Beaufort. The company builds, repairs and maintains docks, builds seawalls and does marine restoration for homes and commercial waterfront property, and it repairs, refinishes and paints decks as well.
Elevation certificates, boundary and as-built surveys, and foundation and height surveys are the homeowner side of Nandina, an engineering, surveying and project management firm on Arrow Road on Hilton Head. It also does ALTA, condominium, construction and control surveys, and its website mentions commercial, municipal and telecommunication projects.
Founded in 1978, per its website, Powell Electric runs a crew of more than 20 full-time employees from State Road S-7-86 in Beaufort and covers Bluffton and Hilton Head as well. Residential, commercial and industrial work are all on the menu, including panel and breaker box upgrades, recessed and outdoor lighting, ceiling fans, remodels and boat lifts.
Floating boat lifts and floating docks are the whole business at Boat Float, which says it is headquartered in Bluffton with support staff around the Southeast. Its website lists EZ Dock, DryDock, LifeDock and Jet Dock products and lifts for everything from kayaks and jet skis to boats up to 70,000 pounds, and claims its lifts launch in under three minutes.
Barge services and barge transport are on the list at O'Quinn Marine Construction, which is not something every dock builder offers. The Beaufort company, on Sheppard Road, takes residential, commercial and municipal marine work from design and permitting through completion: docks and piers, bridges, bulkheads and seawalls, rip-rap, boat lifts, marina projects and pile driving for foundation piles.
Seven days a week, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Kipar Construction Services takes on home repairs and property maintenance from Hidden Lakes Lane in Bluffton. Deck renovations and repairs lead the list, followed by pavers, masonry, carpentry, drywall, painting, pressure washing, drainage, landscaping and irrigation, and the website covers Hilton Head too.
Docks, seawalls, bulkheads, boat ramps and piers are part of the mix at Nix Construction Company on Argent Boulevard in Ridgeland, alongside commercial building, custom homes and foundation repair with helical piles. Its website dates the company to 1995 and lists resort and rental properties, condominiums, offices and public parks among its commercial work.
Project photos from Colleton River, Hampton Lake, Sea Pines and Palmetto Bluff show up in the gallery of Eastman Marine Construction, a dock builder on Mackinlay Way in Ridgeland. The company builds and repairs docks, bulkheads, seawalls and bridges, installs and maintains boat lifts, and lists floating docks, boat launches, rip-rap and erosion control.
Soft washing is the specialty at Extreme Exterior Cleaning & Construction Services on Sams Point Road in Beaufort, and gutter cleaning is one item on a long list. The company also does window cleaning, pressure washing, roof and skylight cleaning, interior and exterior painting, waterproofing and sealants, and deck and dock restoration.
A Bluffton dock builder on Goethe Road. Alpha Marine lists itself as open around the clock, seven days a week.
Bailey Marine Construction works from Old Bailey Road in Okatie. Google lists building construction plus repairs and maintenance, on weekday hours from 9 to 5.
Since 2004, by its website's account, Sea Island Dock Builders has been building and repairing docks as a Port Royal-based crew. The list includes new docks and floating docks, floating ramps, bulkheads and seawalls, boat lift installs, pile driving, and erosion control and shoreline protection, plus design work and ongoing dock maintenance.
Docks, gazebos, garages and decks all show up in Google's categories for Remodelers Inc on Brams Point Road, Hilton Head Island, along with custom homes and kitchen and bath remodels. The listing has no service details beyond that.
Alternative materials in place of standard timber are the pitch at Smithbuilt Marine Construction, which says its docks outlast the usual wood builds. The Port Royal-based company does marine design and engineering as well as construction, covering Beaufort, and handles new docks, dock and seawall repair, and general construction.
Serves the area from nearby
Rental homes can get turnkey service from Sand Dollar Services, a family-owned business as it describes itself, working from Harold Rivers Road on St. Helena Island. Jobs run from a new faucet or ceiling fan up to windows, doors, deck refurbishing, new decks, porches, handrails and minor dock repairs, and it also lists bathroom remodels and drywall.
Kelly Vick owns Dockworks, a dock builder on Central Avenue in Savannah that describes itself as family owned. By the website's count the company has been at it for almost 30 years, and it handles a job from permitting through servicing the lifts afterward.
Engineering rather than construction is the work at Ball Maritime Group, a Savannah firm on East Broughton Street. Its website lists maritime strategic planning, port and navigation engineering, marine terminal analysis and design, rail and intermodal planning, and civil engineering for distribution centers, and claims 25 years of maritime engineering experience.
