Home Elevators · the Lowcountry
Raised houses are why elevators show up in so many homes on the coast. Flood rules put the lowest floor of new homes on Hilton Head and in Beaufort's flood zones well above grade, and living a full story off the ground gets harder as owners age. Salt air and humidity are tough on the machinery, especially when the shaft opens onto a garage or a ground-level storage area.
Ask who services the elevator after installation, how quickly they answer a service call, and whether the plan covers parts. If the equipment sits at ground level in a flood-prone spot, ask what happens to it when water gets in.
Check where the elevator machinery sits compared to flood level. Salt water and electric motors don't get along, and a ground-floor machine room is in the wrong place for a storm surge.

Beach lifts, cargo lifts, platform lifts and dumbwaiters are all on the product list at Elevator-Lift Systems, alongside home elevators and stairlifts. The Bluffton office on Red Cedar Street handles installation, maintenance, repairs, modernization and annual and third-party inspections in houses and commercial buildings alike, and the company says it has been at it for more than 40 years.
Retro-fit home elevators and cargo lifts lead the list at Home Mobility Solutions, which works from Browns Cove Road in Ridgeland and installs across Bluffton, Hilton Head Island, Beaufort, Hardeeville and Port Royal. It also puts in walk-in tubs, chair lifts, wheelchair lifts, custom ramps, grab bars and railings, starting with a free in-home mobility assessment.
