Gutters · the Lowcountry
Summer storms can put down a lot of rain in a few hours, and pine needles and oak leaves fill gutters all year. Water that spills over the edge lands at the foundation, where it soaks the crawl space under a raised house or pools against an older slab. Many second homes go months without anyone looking up at the roofline.
Ask where each downspout will carry the water, not only the price per foot, and whether guards make sense under the trees on your lot. Ray Croft's list of what to book before hurricane season puts gutters and drainage on it.
Follow the water past the downspout. I've seen plenty of new gutters that dump everything right back against the house, two feet from where it started. The job isn't done until the water is somewhere else.
