Long, hot summers and a lot of west-facing glass make home tinting more than a sideline for car shops. Film cuts glare and heat and slows fading on floors and furniture in rooms that take the afternoon sun, which matters in houses with wide views of the marsh or water. In some communities, the HOA has a say in how reflective film looks from the street.
Ask whether the film maker approves the product for your type of window, and whether it affects the window's own warranty. Get the film name and its warranty in writing.
Keep the paperwork on the film. If a window seal fails down the road, the window company's first question is going to be what's stuck to the glass.

Homes, cars, offices and even boats get tinted at Sun Control, a shop on Goethe Road in Bluffton that dates itself to 2009. Films on offer include heat control, privacy, decorative, anti-graffiti, blast retention and daylight redirecting, plus film for touch screens and projection screens, vehicle tint and paint protection.
Reviewers of Lowcountry Window Tinting often mention military discounts and windshield strips, along with pleasant staff and the lifetime warranty. The shop on Parris Island Gateway in Beaufort advertises itself as the area's only LLumar SelectPro dealer, putting FormulaOne film on cars and Vista film on homes and businesses.
Corpus Christi Place on Hilton Head Island is where Hilton Head Premier Window Film keeps its office, and it covers Bluffton, Okatie and Beaufort as well, for homes, businesses and boats. The lineup runs from solar control and ceramic films to safety and security, privacy, decorative, anti-graffiti and school safety films, and the company pitches film as protection in severe weather as well as against heat and fading.
XPEL window film and truck accessories from Ranch Hand, Roll-N-Lock and Retrax are the stock in trade at Top Tint of Bluffton, which despite the name sits on Okatie Highway in Ridgeland. Most of the work is automotive, with XPEL's CS, XR and XR Plus films in several shades, including nano-ceramic for heat rejection.
3M window film is what 3M Coastal Installations, Inc. puts on homes and offices from its Hunter Road shop on Hilton Head Island. The company says it's a certified 3M installer with over 25 years in the trade and more than a million square feet of film installed.
Mobile tinting is the setup at 843 Tint Guy, which keeps a head office on Deerfield Road in Hardeeville and comes to the car, truck or van in Bluffton and nearby towns. Its menu sorts carbon and ceramic IR film by vehicle type, with full windshields and panoramic sunroofs available, and the company also does homes, commercial film, headlight and taillight tint, and headlight restoration.
Port Royal-based A A Window Tinting does vehicle work, and reviewers bring up windshields, thorough results and car stereo jobs as well. It opens at 11 a.m., Monday through Saturday.
Window tinting isn't a usual handyman line, but Rob's Handyman Services offers it along with smart home installs, entertainment system setup, TV mounting and ceiling fans. The Okatie-based business covers Ridgeland too, and also does painting, trim, pressure washing, landscaping, hardscaping, entryway upgrades and re-screening of lanais and screened porches, for homes only.
Sun Control Window Film on Wild Horse Road, Hilton Head Island, applies and replaces window tint on residential and business windows and opens daily, Sundays included. The company says it carries films at every price point and that its installers leave the house neat, with everything put back in its place.

Window film takes up much of Window Genie of Savannah's work, from solar control and security film to decorative film and removal, and reviewers mention the glare reduction. The Savannah location of the brand also does interior and exterior window cleaning, solar panel and skylight cleaning, house, roof and deck washing, concrete sealing, gutter cleaning and holiday lights.
ASAP Window Tinting has been putting film on Savannah homes and businesses since 1987, by its own account, from a shop on East Derenne Avenue. It sells Vista residential and commercial films as a LLumar SelectPro dealer, covering solar, decorative, safety and security, school safety and anti-graffiti film, plus film removal.
