Sandy soil and summer heat keep sprinkler systems running hard for much of the year. Most homes in Bluffton, Okatie and Hardeeville were built since 2000, so plenty of systems are original builder installs with worn heads, tired valves and controllers past their prime. On Hilton Head, many systems water second homes while the owner is away, which means a broken line can run unnoticed for weeks.
Ask whether the system has a rain or soil-moisture sensor and whether the tech will walk every zone with you. Watch where the spray lands: water hitting siding, windows and the foundation every morning is a house problem, not a lawn problem.
Turn the system on and go stand next to the house. If the wall is getting watered along with the grass, that's rot and mildew waiting their turn.

Paver driveways are what reviewers mention most about American Paving Design, along with fire pits, walkways, travertine and crews they describe as hardworking and polite. The Bluffton company on Pennington Drive installs pavers and travertine for driveways, patios, pool decks, outdoor kitchens and fire features, builds retaining walls and lays artificial turf, and it also does concrete work, grading and hauling.
Poolscapes, lighting and hardscapes are the specialties Island Environments lists, alongside design, construction and regular maintenance for homes and commercial properties from its office on Island Drive on Hilton Head Island. The company, locally owned by its own account, also handles drainage, drip irrigation and disease control.
Recurring programs anchor the work at Coastal Shores Landscape on Red Oaks Lane in Ridgeland: landscape maintenance, a seasonal color program and turf and plant care, including chemical application. On the project side it does new construction installations, hardscapes, synthetic turf, landscape lighting, irrigation, drainage and pine straw, for homes and businesses.
Kitties Landing Way in Bluffton is home to a branch of Smith Turf & Irrigation, a supplier its website says has 21 locations across the Carolinas, Tennessee and Virginia. It sells irrigation parts and accessories, drainage and landscape lighting products, water garden supplies and turf equipment to contractors and homeowners.
Irrigation is the core of the work at Applewood Landscapes Construction: new system installs and sprinkler repair, with sod, mulch, pine straw and plantings alongside. The shop is on Wyndham Drive in Bluffton, though its website is written around Hardeeville and also names Ridgeland, Hilton Head and Beaufort, plus hardscapes and outdoor lighting.
Lawn work, landscaping and power washing are the three lines at Magical Lawn Care Service, which works out of Port Royal. Its site goes further into aeration, dethatching, fertilization, sprinkler installs and repairs, sod, patios, pergolas, decorative concrete, tree trimming and removal, and leaf cleanup, for homes and commercial grounds.
Palm tree trimming and pressure washing sit alongside the usual lawn maintenance, cleanups, pine straw and mulch at Barrientos Landscaping. The Okatie company also handles irrigation repairs.
Wet yards are the specialty TLM Irrigation and Lighting advertises: French drains, channel drains and drainage systems, plus, as a newer service, gutters and downspouts to move the water off. The Lady's Island-based outfit also installs and repairs sprinklers, adds zones, upgrades controllers to smart models, fits rain sensors, repairs backflow devices and works on low-voltage landscape lighting.
Paver and hardscape jobs dominate the reviews of Tradewinds Irrigation, which also credit fair pricing, prompt service and helpful staff. Working out of Lady's Island and covering Beaufort, the company, which also goes by Tradewinds Outdoor Living, does landscape design and installation, paver driveways and walkways, artificial turf, grading and reseeding, mulching, tree pruning and lawn care for residential and commercial customers.
In business locally since 1982, by its own account, Orlando & Son's Inc is mainly an irrigation outfit working out of Port Royal. It installs, inspects and maintains commercial and residential sprinkler systems of all brands, and also lists landscape and garden lighting, drainage and disease control.
Irrigation setting and monitoring is on the list at Blufftons Best Lawn Care, along with irrigation repair, hedge and tree trimming, branch removal, flower planting and garden planning, for homes and commercial properties. The company is on St Simons Drive in Bluffton and works Saturday mornings.
Commercial grounds are the focus for the Yellowstone Landscape location on Speedway Boulevard in Hardeeville. It lists commercial maintenance and irrigation, tree care including cabling and bracing, fertilization, disease and pest management, and cleanups.
Working Bluffton and Beaufort from Bluffton Parkway, Coastal Carolina Landscapes lists lawn care, sod, plantings, rock and walkway landscaping, yard drainage, irrigation installs and yard lighting. Reviewers single out the workmanship.
Commercial properties only. The Hilton Head franchise of U.S. Lawns works for property managers and owners of shops, restaurants, office parks and apartment complexes, according to its own description.
Fertilization and weed control are the specialty at American Outdoor Maintenance in Bluffton, sold as year-round packages priced by property size. It also does drainage work, including downspout and pipe drainage, along with gutter cleaning, irrigation leak repair and decorative rock, for homes and commercial property.
Out on Deloss Point Road in Ridgeland, Boyles Maintenance & Irrigation is listed on Google as a landscaper. No services or hours are posted.
Yard and tree work handled by the same two people every visit is the pitch at Coastal Bloom Landscaping. The Okatie company covers Bluffton, Hilton Head Island, Okatie, Hardeeville and Ridgeland with lawn care, sod, irrigation installs, planting and mulch, plus tree trimming and removal, stump grinding and storm cleanup.
Finch Street on Hilton Head Island is the address for Landscape Solutions & Irrigation, which Google lists as a landscaper. It hasn't posted services or hours.
Austin Outdoor works commercial accounts from Speedway Boulevard in Hardeeville: grounds maintenance, irrigation, tree care with cabling and bracing, fertilization, disease and pest management, and cleanups. Weekday hours.
Pool landscaping, retaining walls and outdoor water features are part of a hardscape-heavy list at Sweetgrass Landscaping on Riverwalk Boulevard in Ridgeland. It also handles concrete masonry, grading and resloping, and garden and landscape design and installation, for homes and commercial sites.
Serves the area from nearby
A Savannah company on West Bay Street that also covers Bluffton and Hilton Head, Bloomhouse Landscape and Irrigation installs, inspects and repairs irrigation systems and does landscape design, installation and maintenance. The list goes further into hardscaping, retaining walls, sod, yard drainage and grading, for homes, commercial sites and multi-family properties.
