Cabinets and Countertops · the Lowcountry
Kitchens and baths are where a lot of remodels start. Many of Hilton Head's 1980s homes and villas are on a second or third kitchen, a lot of Bluffton's post-2000 houses are due for their first remodel, and retirees in Sun City and the Okatie area are rethinking baths for aging in place. Humidity matters even indoors: cabinet boxes under sinks and beside dishwashers swell when a slow leak goes unnoticed, especially in a house that sits empty.
Ask what the cabinet boxes are made of, what the countertop price covers for templating, cutouts and edges, and who reconnects the plumbing. Wade Banks explains why so many owners remodel instead of moving.
Open the sink base and look at the box. That's where a cabinet earns its keep, and it's where cheap ones swell first. I'd ask what it's made of, because sooner or later it's going to get wet.
